How to Make Friends In Midlife
Apr 05, 2023I’m the first to say that I make a conscience effort to prioritize girlfriend time as much as possible.
Whether it’s meeting up for a walk on the local trail or our monthly Sunday brunch, my girlfriend time is something I treasure, especially as I’ve gotten older.
Not-so-fun-fact: 40% of women feel like they lack companionship or meaningful relationships.
Having a small circle of friends is so beneficial for so many reasons:
- Improved mental health: Having friends can reduce stress and anxiety, provide emotional support, and boost self-esteem.
- Increased physical health: Social interaction can strengthen the immune system, lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
- Longer lifespan: Studies have found that people with strong social connections tend to live longer than those who are socially isolated.
- Enhanced cognitive function: Regular social engagement can improve memory, problem-solving skills, and overall brain function.
- Better overall well-being: Friendships can bring joy, laughter, and a sense of purpose to life, which can lead to greater happiness and satisfaction.
Now that we understand the benefits of having friends in midlife . . . how do we make them?
- Don’t be afraid to reconnect with old friends or co-workers. Reach out to old friends and touch base. Set up a phone chat or coffee date to catch up and reconnect.
- Make a Casual Acquaintance a New Friend. Take time to develop a friendship with something you have only casually interacted with like a neighbor, colleagues, or women you see at the gym every week and turn them into friends.
- Join a Fitness Group/Class. Chat up the ladies you see week after week, make small talk and slowly turn that workout buddy to a friend that you invite out to coffee or brunch.
- Say Yes More Often. Saying yes to more invites will help you build those strong relationships. Get out of your comfort zone, try new things, make memories and enjoy life!!
- Lean Into Social Media As a Resource. Friendships can also be virtual. Don’t shy away from reaching out to women that inspire you on social media, strike up a conversation.
- Don’t Forget To Be a Friend. I bet you are not the only one looking for an invite to be part of a great circle of girls, be open to inviting new women into your group.
